I remember reading this back in high school back before the movie came out, and loving it and being excited for the movie. And while I enjoyed the movie, like you said there were so many differences. I remember reading the sequel as well, and comparing the book sequel and movie sequels there are even less similarities. But I know there's been several more books written that I haven't read, and I'd love to go back and reread the first and then continue with all the books.
